In a tweet sent out a few hours after their joint press conference, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto said he told Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump there is no chance Mexico will pay for a wall along the country’s border with the U.S. The tweet directly contradicts Trump’s own claim that the two didn’t discuss the matter of financing the wall.

“At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall,” Peña Nieto said in his tweet.

In a joint press conference occurring just after the Wednesday afternoon meeting between Trump and Peña Nieto, Trump explicitly said that wall payment had not been discussed at all during the conversation.

“We did not discuss payment of the wall,” Trump said. “That will be for a later date. This was a preliminary meeting, an excellent meeting, and we are very well on our way.”

Peña Nieto avoided the topic during the press conference itself, declining to answer when reporters asked about Mexico paying for the wall.

In another tweet, Peña Nieto said that after his initial statement, the conversation turned to other topics and was conducted in a “respectful” manner.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the Trump campaign to see if it had a response to the apparent discrepancy, but the campaign did not immediately send a reply.
