At least 112 million people live in more than 300 sanctuary jurisdictions in the United States, according to a Daily Caller analysis.
The Center for Immigration Studies released a report Wednesday listing all the states, counties and cities that do not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
They do this by “either by refusing to or prohibiting agencies from complying with ICE detainers, imposing unreasonable conditions on detainer acceptance, denying ICE access to interview incarcerated aliens, or otherwise impeding communication or information exchanges between their personnel and federal immigration officers,” CIS wrote in its report.
ICE uses detainers to take custody of criminal aliens in the custody of state and local law enforcement. Using the most recent U.S Census population estimates available (2015 for all but one city) there are an estimated 112.5 million people living in these “sanctuary” jurisdictions.
According to the CIS report, the state penitentiaries of Rhode Island, North Dakota and Washington don’t comply with ICE. Adding these state populations to the individuals living in “sanctuary” jurisdictions increases the estimated population to 114.3 million.
The U.S had an estimated population of 320 million in 2015, which means over a third of the U.S lives in areas where law enforcement does not comply with ICE when it comes to criminal aliens. The Justice Department announced in July that some “sanctuary cities” will stop receiving federal law enforcement grants.
