A group of Syrian rebels found evidence of yet another Islamic State atrocity when they discovered special prison cells specifically designed to torture and rape women.

Militia fighters belonging to the Manbij Military Council, a Syrian rebel group under the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), found the cells as they were searching a prison abandoned by ISIS fighters in the city of Manbij. The SDF seized the city in mid-August, but operations to clear the town of booby traps and remaining ISIS fighters continue.

“We discovered an Islamic State group prison for women, with rooms for groups as well as solitary prisoners,” Ibrahim al-Mohammed told the Arab24 news agency Thursday. “We found the worst, most violent torture tools, and may God curse them.”

The cells were reinforced with metal doors and contained pillows, blankets and mattresses. It became evidently clear they were designed to rape and torture women, after the militia discovered sexual stimulants and contraceptives at the site. ISIS has been known to use drugs so they can consistently rape sex slaves and captives, later force-feeding them contraceptives to avoid pregnancy.

“We found various kinds of pills, including sexual stimulation, contraceptives and narcotic pills which were used by the Islamic State group for torture,” explained militia leader Omar Mazerli. “They have very strange ways. This place was very hard to find and it is well hidden, but we got here with God’s will and the efforts of the Military Council.”

Torture cells have previously been discovered in and around Manbij, meaning it is likely that more of these types of facilities will be discovered as ISIS continues to lose territory in Iraq and Syria.
