An Egyptian lawmaker is urging women to accept the practice of female genital mutilation so that they’re sex drive doesn’t overwhelm the large numbers of sexually impotent men in the country.

He said women should voluntarily undergo the mutilation of their external sex organs in order to “reduce their sexual desires” to the level of many men in Egypt, reports Egyptian media. It’s their duty to “stand by their men” in this way in order to make their lives easier.

“We are a population whose men suffer from sexual weakness, which is evident because Egypt is among the biggest consumers of sexual stimulants that only the weak will consume,” Elhamy Agina, the member of parliament, told reporters. If we stop FGM, we will need strong men and we don’t have men of that sort.”

In another TV interview Agina reiterated his claim half of Egyptian men are sexually impotent. “This is a scientific fact based on research,” he said according to BBC News. “Fifty per cent of Egyptian men are sexually impotent. This is a disease.”

Nearly 90 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 49 in Egypt have undergone the procedure, according to Unicef estimates cited by BBC News, although the number is declining. The mutilation is typically conducted on girls between infancy and age 15.
