Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said Democrats could soon retake the House, according to an interview with Politico Thursday.

“I thought in December I would’ve told you we’d win 20 seats, left to our own devices,” Pelosi said. “Seeing the behavior of the [GOP] presidential candidates right after that when the debates [happened], I became even more optimistic because they were so pathetic.”

“Since then, I think anything is possible. I think it comes down to probably a single digit, one way or another,” Pelosi added. “If Hillary [Clinton] were to win 54-46, oh my God. It’s all over. If it’s 53-47, and I think that’s in the realm of possibility … that’s a big deal. Five or more [percentage points] is a big deal.”

This is far from the only time Pelosi asserted democrats will retake the House. Despite losing almost 70 Democratic House seats during her reign as speaker, she said back in January that Democrats would take over the House in 2018.

Pelosi later moved that date to the 2016 election, according to The Washington Post.

“We think that second to the president, the most powerful person is the speaker of the House. The Senate is more [constrained by] 60 votes and all that. Here there is awesome power in the speaker, and you can see what a difference that makes in passing an agenda.”
