Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein said she wouldn’t have killed terrorist Osama bin Laden on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

“I think assassinations … they’re against international law to start with and to that effect, I think I would not have assassinated Osama bin Laden but would have captured him and brought him to trial,” she told the Des Moines Register.

The founder of al-Qaida, who was killed by Navy SEALs in 2011, was responsible for the deaths of nearly 3,000 when planes hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.

Stein, a strong supporter of steep military cuts, said while she does believe repercussions against bin Laden were in order, she thinks it was handled the wrong way.

“I think all evidence certainly points to bin Laden, but the 9/11 attackers had assistance and funding and bin Laden had assistance and funding,” she continued. “What we should have done is declare this a crime against humanity and pursued it, pursued the attackers and gotten the intelligence about who was behind this.”

The candidate released a statement on her website Saturday calling for a new investigation into the 9/11 attacks, alleging the 2002 congressional report released was not comprehensive enough.

“Under our administration a new inquiry would have access to the considerable body of responsible independent research that has emerged over the last 15 years,” the statement reads. “We would create an independent 9/11 Commission, not one dominated by members with an interest in protecting the reputation and careers of foreign affairs and intelligence communities.”

Stein, who currently has a warrant out for her arrest for misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and criminal mischief, is currently polling on average at 3.1 percent.
