Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said recently that half of Donald Trump’s supporters are “deplorable” in part due to their “Islamophobia.” By these standards, however, about 30 percent of Democratic voters are deplorable as well.

Clinton supporter former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Monday that Trump has exposed a “terrible underbelly of America that thinks it’s perfectly fine to be Islamaphobe or to ban Muslims.”

There has been plenty of polling on what voters think of the Muslim ban.

In the most recent Reuters tracking poll of the Muslim ban, June 23, 31.1 percent of likely Democratic general election voters support a ban on Muslims entering the United States. In the June 6 Reuters poll, 38 percent of Democratic voters backed the Muslim ban.

The most recent Morning Consult poll regarding the Muslim ban shows less Democratic support for the policy than Reuters found, but still not insignificant numbers. The August 1-2 poll found that 22 percent of Democrats polled supported banning Muslims from entering the United States.

A late March YouGov poll found results more similar to Reuters, 32 percent of Democrats agreed there should be “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

That same YouGov poll found that 46 percent of Democrats hold an unfavorable view of Islam. In general, close to half of all voters grew to support the ban on Muslims, so Clinton actually underestimated the amount of “deplorables.”
