A Black Lives Matter UK leader flew to Brazil on British taxpayer money to speak at a conference on feminism, according to The Sunday Times.
Natalie Jeffers, co-founder of BLM UK, runs Matters of the Earth, which received a $66,523 grant from the Department for International Development, reports the Daily Mail.
Matters of the Earth works with activists, academics and communities to “educate and empower people in organizing, strengthening and building movements.”
Her Brazil trip prevented her from protesting at the London Airport Sept. 6, when BLM UK activists locked arms, and labeled the climate crisis “racist,” while claiming only a “small elite is able to fly.”(RELATED: Black Lives Matter Protest Closes London Airport)
As Jeffers flew to Brazil, she re-tweeted BLM UK’s main talking point under the Matters of the Earth Twitter account.
“At London City Airport a small elite is able to fly, in 2016 alone 3,176 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean,” the tweet read.
Jeffers attended the Association for Women’s Rights in Development conference. Jeffers stayed at the Costa do Sauipe resort, which describes itself as a “heavenly place…surrounded by natural beauty.”
“In 2015, one of our subcontractors commissioned Matters of the Earth to produce small-scale and specific pieces of work,” a spokesperson for the department said. “The money was not used for wider agendas.”
Jeffers previously stated that the money given is not used for Black Lives Matter work.
A source close to the International Development Secretary Priti Patel alleged the minister is not happy about the money spent, according to the Sun Times.
