Two people were stabbed in a random knife attack on Pennsylvania Avenue in Capitol Hill in broad daylight Tuesday morning.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) apprehended a suspect in the violent assault but have not released information on him or the victims. The man went into the parking lot of an Exxon gas station on Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast at roughly 10:17 a.m. and stabbed a customer in the neck.

A gas station employee who witnessed the attack said the suspect then went across the street to a park and stabbed another person, reports NBC Washington.

The employee said he did not recognize the suspect and added the attack appeared completely unprovoked. The unidentified victims suffered non-life threatening wounds.

D.C. is suffering a rash of violence this week that began with three separate shootings across D.C. within a five hour span Sunday evening into Monday morning. One of the victims suffered a gunshot wound outside a elementary school in Northwest, D.C.

The homicide rate in the District spiked 54 percent in 2015, and is only 12 percent lower so far this year. Homicides have tripled in Ward 7.

D.C. is suffering a violent year overall, with 96 homicides across the city. The alarming surge in homicides is down from the shocking numbers in 2015, but is still historically high. There were a total of 105 homicides in 2014 and 88 in 2012.
