A reporter for VICE News was arrested Saturday for trespassing at a Trump campaign event in Houston, and was held by authorities for approximately 11 hours.

Journalist Alex Thompson was allegedly never read his Miranda rights — a fifth amendment law requiring that all suspects are informed of their right to remain silent. When he asked why, the officer allegedly responded: “This is Houston.”

Thompson and three other VICE News employees were trying to attend an event hosted by the Remembrance Project, a Houston-based nonprofit, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at a hotel. They were not allowed access, according to VICE’s own account — Thompson felt he had the proper press credentials to be at the event.

Hotel staff asked the media crew to leave, but Thompson remained in the lobby while the others left. Management then advised Thompson he would be arrested if he refused to leave.

The manager then apparently escorted a police officer to Thompson’s location to have him removed from the premises. VICE News claims that before Thompson was ever allowed to explain the situation, he was arrested.

Thompson was later released on a $500 bond.

Trump’s campaign told VICE News that they were not involved in his arrest.

The Houston Police Department did not respond to calls for a press statement.
