North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency Wednesday and initiated steps to deploy the National Guard after a second night of rioting in Charlotte.

The riot poured into downtown Charlotte and violence followed. One man was shot by rioters and is in critical condition. Seven police officers were transported to the hospital and there were multiple instances of violence towards journalists. One CNN reporter was shoved to the ground and rioters also allegedly attempted to throw a photographer into a trashcan fire.

The riots occurred after police shot a man, Keith Lamont Scott, they claim was armed on Tuesday. A report says dash-cam footage showed the man coming towards police with a gun.
