After much resistance, Sen. Ted Cruz is expected to endorse GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump as early as Friday.
Multiple sources close the former presidential hopeful confirmed after consistent talks with the Trump camp in recent weeks, the senator will throw his support behind the candidate.
Trump recently made a Cruz-led effort to effort to block the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) transfer part of his campaign platform.
The Texas Republican, who had a contentious relationship with his primary opponent for months, refused to endorse the billionaire during his speech at the Republican National Convention in July, telling Americans to “vote their conscience.”
Trump attacked Cruz on numerous occasions, alleging his father was involved in the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy and calling his wife unattractive. Cruz often fired back, calling the reality TV star a “pathological liar” and a “a serial philanderer.”
Critics of the endorsement argue it will hurt Cruz’s chances if he seeks the nomination in the future.
“If he announces he endorses, it destroys his political brand,”a former Cruz campaign staffer told Politico.
