Speaking in the country of Georgia Saturday morning, Pope Francis warned Catholics in attendance that the whole world is trying to destroy marriage.

Catholic News Agency reports the Pope called gender theory — the belief that biological men can become women and vice versa — “a great enemy of marriage today.”

“Today the whole world is at war trying to destroy marriage,” he said, adding that this war is being fought “with ideas” rather than weapons.

The Pope noted “certain ideologies that destroy marriage. So we need to defend ourselves from ideological colonization.”

The Pope’s position on gender theory stands in contrast with those of several Democratic politicians who claim be practicing Catholics, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine. The Daily Caller reached out to the Clinton campaign to ask whether Kaine will be expected to support Clinton’s position on transgender issues over those of Pope Francis. The campaign did not respond by press time.

Pope Francis’s comments Saturday are consistent with his previous statements on transgenderism.

“We are living in a moment of annihilation of man as God’s image,” he said in August. Francis called it “terrible” that schools are teaching children that they can choose their gender. (RELATED: Pope Francis: Gender Ideology Behind ‘Annihilation Of Man As God’s Image)

“Today, in schools they are teaching this to children — to children! — that everyone can choose their gender,” Francis said, blaming “those people and institutions that give you money. It is the ideological colonization, also supported by influential countries. And this is terrible.”
