A co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement was arrested while trying to protest a press conference held by the Los Angeles Police Department Monday.
Police arrested BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors and BLM Los Angeles chapter organizer Melina Abdullah, and Niki Okuk after they refused to leave the police headquarters lobby, reports LAist.
“Carnell Snell was his name. He was an 18-year-old child. He was somebody’s baby, and somebody in your department killed him, shot him in the back five times. We’re here because we are tired, but we’re not afraid,” Cullors is seen saying before getting arrested.
The public did not have access to the press conference, according to Abdullah.
During the conference, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck discussed the two fatal police shootings which occurred over the weekend.
Police shot Carnell Snell Jr. Saturday following a police chase. Officers allege that when they tried to pull a car over, the driver drove away when they went up to it. Snell was fatally shot when he and another passenger in the car tried to flee the vehicle.
A handgun was found at the scene, according to police.
The second shooting occurred Sunday when officers responded to a call about a man with a gun. The man was shot after officers approached him.
Abdullah claimed that police were committing a “double assassination,” first by killing Snell and then “assassinating” his character.
“And so it was really, really important that we uplifted the stories of the community, pushed back against the posthumous character assassination of Carnell Snell, and gave our own narrative,” Abdullah said. “We know that LAPD continues to kill our people and then justifies the killings with whatever they think makes those murders justifiable. That’s why we were there.”
The three women were released about an hour after they were booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.
