In a surprise twist, Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan is hitting the campaign trail with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump Saturday at the Wisconsin county fair, according to a press release.

“On Saturday, Wisconsin’s 1st District Congressman and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) is set to attend the 1st Congressional District Republican Party of Wisconsin Fall Fest. This annual Wisconsin event will be located at the Walworth County Fairgrounds,” the announcement, sent out Thursday, said.
Sen. Ron Johnson, Gov. Scott Walker, and state Attorney General Brad Schimel are scheduled to appear with Ryan, along with Trump.
Inside sources contend that the Trump campaign initiated the conversation, Ryan then invited Trump to the event, and several prominent lawmakers then joined, reported Politico.
Ryan hesitated to endorse Trump initially, telling reporters that he “just wasn’t ready” to endorse the official Republican nominee, and Trump quickly returned fire, going as far as praising Ryan’s primary challenger on Twitter. Since Ryan officially endorsed Trump just before his primary win in Wisconsin, the Speaker is keeping his distance from the controversial nominee.
Ryan’s team told Politico that they believe Wisconsin voters know Ryan enough to understand that he doesn’t fully support Trump, and that one campaign appearance won’t change that much. Ryan’s most important goal now is to keep Congress in the hands of Republicans, something that pundits believe means Ryan campaigning with Trump.
