More than a dozen San Antonio police officers donned Republican nominee Donald Trump’s iconic “Make America Great Again” hats while escorting the presidential hopeful to and from the San Antonio International Airport Tuesday.

Trump was in town for a fundraiser and the uniformed officers were part of the department’s motorcycle unit.

“The unit often helps transport dignitaries when they come to town,” Mike Helle, president of the San Antonio Police Officers Association, told mySanAntonio.com.

Trump thanked the officers and posted a short clip to Twitter — they responded by giving the nominee a thumbs up.

San Antonio’s Police Chief William McManus released a statement the same day asserting that the officers violated department policy.

“The officers wearing the campaign hats while in uniform violated SAPD policy and will be disciplined appropriately,” McManus said in a statement. “The officers displayed poor judgement,” he continued. The department released the statement over their official Twitter account:

“I expect them to know better than to give the appearance of endorsing a candidate while on duty and in uniform, regardless of the political campaign or the candidate,” Mcmanus concluded.

Trump is popular with the law enforcement community and has garnered endorsements from police unions around the country. The largest police union in the nation, the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), endorsed Trump in September.

Trump has blasted politicians who “demonized unions representing law enforcement,” specifically criticizing President Barack Obama for what the police unions contend are “politically motivated attacks” against officers.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton irked the law enforcement community when she failed to fill out a questionnaire sent by the police union.

The FOP sends the questionnaire to candidates each election cycle in order to determine who best reflects thier views. In 2012, both 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney and Obama filled out the questionnaire.

While snubbing the police union, Clinton simultaneously embraces Black Lives Matter and other activists groups, like Mothers of the Movement.
