Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton denounced Republican opponent Donald Trump as a “puppet” of the Russian government who would implement a “wish list” of policies harmful to America but helpful to Vladimir Putin.

The attack came about after debate host Chris Wallace brought up Clinton’s statement to a Brazilian bank that she wanted open borders for the United States. Clinton responded by attacking the source, saying the Russian government was attempting to influence America’s election by hacking Democratic email servers.

Trump then attacked, arguing Russian president Vladimir Putin simply doesn’t respect Clinton.

“Well, that’s because he would rather have a puppet as president of the United States,” Clinton said.

“No puppet, you’re the puppet,” Trump responded.

Clinton doubled down, attacking Trump so harshly she fell just short of calling him the agent of a foreign power.

“It is pretty clear you won’t admit the Russians have engaged in cyber-attacks against the United States of America, that you encouraged espionage against our people, that you are willing to spout the Putin line, sign up for his wish list, break up NATO, do whatever he wants to do,” she said. “And that you continue to get help from him because he has a very clear favorite in this race.”

Clinton added that Russia’s supposed intervention in the 2016 election was an “unprecedented” moment in U.S. political history.

Trump countered that Clinton was simply lashing out because Russia “has outsmarted her every step of the way.” He pointed to Syria and negotiations over nuclear weapons stockpiles as ways the U.S. had fared poorly versus Russia.
