An Islamic State fighter blew himself up on live TV, when confronting Iraqi soldiers advancing on the city of Mosul.

The CNN report indicates the fighter hid himself in a tunnel, awaiting approaching Iraqi forces before trying to attack them. The video shows Iraqi soldiers taking several shots at the ISIS fighter, before the vest goes off without injuring anyone.

ISIS fighters have dug an extensive network of tunnels throughout Mosul and its surrounding areas, the Pentagon warned reporters before the offensive on Mosul began Monday. Pentagon officials caution that the operation to fully retake the city could take months, and that defeated ISIS fights will convert back to a high-grade insurgency.

ISIS suicide operations could plague Iraq for years to come. Nearly 300 civilians were killed by an ISIS suicide bomb in downtown Baghdad in July, marking one of the deadliest bombings in Iraqi history.
