A police officer was charged with a DUI after getting arrested on duty for drunk driving Sunday morning in Washington, D.C.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) detained Officer Arthur Thompson at roughly 2:20 a.m. near Fairlawn, after neighbors called to complain about him. Authorities arrived on scene and “detected the odor of alcohol” on Thompson. Authorities confirmed that Thompson was drunk on duty after administering field sobriety tests, reports WJLA.

“This is the first time I’ve ever heard anything like this,” Morihya Logan, a resident in a nearby neighborhood, told WJLA. “Considering the fact that there’s kids that play around here, anything could have happened while he was on duty, so it’s a good thing he was charged.”

Thompson is a four-year veteran of the MPD. His policing powers are currently revoked as authorities investigate the bizarre incident, reports NBC4.

“I don’t want to judge him. I don’t know what his circumstances are, but it’s unfortunate,” resident Kennice Gabourel told WJLA.

The MPD has not released an official statement on the DUI. The incident is under investigation by the MPD Internal Affairs Division.
