President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte is famous for his profanity-riddled tirades, but he swears to God that he is done cursing.

Duterte claims that he had a religious experience on the plane ride back to the Philippines from Japan. “I heard a voice telling me to stop swearing or the plane will crash,” he told reporters after arriving safely at the Davao International Airport. “And I said, ‘Who is this?’ So, of course, ‘It’s God,'” Duterte explained. “So, I promised to stop.”

“A promise to God is a promise to the people,” the president added.

There are, however, exceptions to Duterte’s promise to the Almighty. When talking about the U.S., he said it would depend on the timing. In recent weeks, Duterte has been repeatedly launching verbal assaults against the U.S. He has even promised to “break up with America;” he recently called for a “separation from America.”

Duterte has a stunning record for offensive rhetoric.

These include calling both President Barack Obama and the Pope a “son of a whore.” The former was blasted for criticisms of Duterte’s drug war, and the latter was slammed for causing traffic problems. Duterte also told Obama to “go to hell.” During his time in office, he also issued a “fuck you” to the United Nations and flipped off the European Union. Duterte has also called a number of people a “son of a bitch.”

The president also regularly threatens to murder people, at one point stating that he wanted to slaughter drug addicts like Hitler did the Jews. Duterte has been accused of running death squads, killing journalists and critics, and sponsoring extrajudicial killings. Curbing the murderous rhetoric and behavior was not mentioned as a component of Duterte’s new agreement with God.
