A hacked email released by Wikileaks this morning showed some surprisingly frank talk from the Clinton camp about the campaign’s rhetoric.

In an email from early October 2015, Teddy Goff, Clinton’s digital/tech manager, forwarded Clinton talking points to John Podesta. Goff added, “As I think you know, I’ve been on a little kick about why we tend speak in such a tortured, nuanced way when we don’t get any advantage from the nuance, and just wind up looking political.”

Clinton has faced criticism before for her murky positions on issues like the Keystone Pipeline and the Trans Pacific Partnership. Clinton has frequently been described as “calculating” as well.

The forwarded email included several Clinton talking points, like, “The reality is, racism is still alive and well in America today, and it holds us all back. We all have a responsibility to confront racism and racial inequality in education and wherever it occurs.”

The email also included strategizing about how to frame free community college and how to cast opponents of Planned Parenthood as simply wanting “shame and blame women.”
