MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle railed against the current tenor of social media while interviewing retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn on Wednesday.

“Are you not afraid of the tone that has been set by some supporters of Donald Trump,” Ruhle posed to Flynn. “Are you not afraid of this?”

Flynn responded that “the American people are very smart and the American people are very sick of the establishment in Washington, DC and the dishonesty that continues to come out of that establishment.”

“That’s what I believe,” he continued. “That’s why I’m sitting here today. You know, I appreciate your question. I appreciate your fear, but I think it’s fear that you should not have. I think the American people are much, much smarter than you know.”

“I do believe that the American people are good and I believe they’re smart,” Ruhle countered. “But I will tell you, I look at the people who come after me on Twitter and the things that they say, and I am without a doubt afraid for myself and my children at this time when all of this hate has been unleashed in the country.”
