A deer galloped onto the tracks of the D.C. Metro system, slamming rush hour riders with delays Friday morning.

Officials with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) notified the public of the incident at roughly 8:30 a.m. but did not specify what type of animal was on the tracks.

A spokesman later identified the animal as a deer that made its way into the system near the Silver Spring station. D.C. Metro officials were still working to remove the deer as of 9:30 a.m. and reiterated a warning for riders to expect delays due to the incident, reports The Washington Post.

A spokesman said that the deer was “slowly galloping” along the tracks at roughly 9:30 a.m. and officials were waiting for it to exit the tracks. Trains are single tracking on the red line between the Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations while officials attempt to deal with the situation.

Riders should expect delays along the red line from Fort Totten to Glenmont. Red line riders are already facing daily delays due to the current SafeTrack repair surge.

Line segment shutdowns between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten stations are causing major service disruptions in the system and officials closed the Brookland and Rhode Island Avenue stations. Officials continue to encourage commuters to find alternative transportation for the next 25 days.

Red line trains are running between the Shady Grove and NoMa-Gallaudet stations every six minutes and between the Glenmont and Fort Totten stations every 10 minutes.
