Bill Clinton wants the next President to make America great again, according to leaked remarks at a private fundraiser released by WikiLeaks.

His wife Hillary has frequently said on the campaign trail that “America is great,” but Clinton told attendees at a private fundraiser in Maryland in October 2015 about economic issues facing Americans.

Clinton said, “Now, I happen to think that President Obama has done a better job with the economy than a lot of people give him credit for, because we got all the jobs we lost back in less than eight years, and typically it takes 10 full years after a financial crash to recover your job loss. But in a global economy, we have not recovered our income losses. Even today, the median income, the one in the middle, after inflation, is lower than it was on my last day in office.”

The former president continued on to say: “But the job of the next president is to bring America back, an America where if people work hard, they can get rewarded; where if you do what you’re supposed to do, you can send your kids to college and they can look forward to having a decent future; where it’s possible if you work hard to raise a family and succeed at work and at home in the most important job of any society, raising children.”

Clinton in his private remarks has showed sympathy for Trump’s base supporters, working-class whites. At one private fundraiser, he said the Obama years had left no hope for them.

In another, the former president said, “When people feel they’ve been shafted and they don’t expect anything to happen anyway, they just want the maddest person in the room to represent them. And that is perfectly psychologically understandable and predictable. Most people in America haven’t had a raise in 15 years.”
