Republican Sen. Pat Toomey fended off challenger Katie McGinty in the Pennsylvania Senate race Tuesday.

Both President Barack Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton campaigned hard and consistently for McGinty, who worked on energy policy for former Vice President Al Gore and former President Bill Clinton, and more recently served as the secretary of environmental protection in Pennsylvania. She hit Toomey hard on the campaign trail for refusing to disavow Republican nominee Donald Trump.

McGinty and Toomey were neck and neck in the polls for much of the race in the Real Clear Politics polling average, but McGinty picked up a small lead in almost every poll since mid to late October. She certainly benefitted from the turnout for Clinton.

Toomey rode into the Senate on the wave of Republican victories in the 2010 midterm election, and has toed the line as a relatively popular moderate in a typically blue state. His support for gun control laws, for example, earned him the endorsement of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, and he ran a commercial in the lead up to election day featuring praise from Obama for his left-leaning stance.

The race was the most expensive Senate race in history, with Republicans and Democrats together spending a whopping $162 million dollars. More than $100 million of that total came from outside spending groups.
