Looking for a tasty Thanksgiving soup recipe? Senate Republicans shared how to make their famous bean soup just in time for the holiday.

The soup is served in the Senate’s restaurant every day, and has been around since 1901.

According to the Senate, the bean soup tradition began early in the 20th-century at the request of Senator Fred Dubois of Idaho.  A second story attributes the request to Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota, who expressed his love for bean soup in 1903.

The Senate Republican conference released a video that directs interested Americans on how to prepare the legendary soup:

The ingredients for the famous bean soup are not kept secret. The Senate, in the interest of transparency, lists the ingredients of the soup online.

The recipe calls for two pounds of dried navy beans, four quarts of hot water, one and one-half pounds of smoked ham hocks, one onion (chopped), two tablespoons of butter and salt and pepper for the taste.

The Senate offers specific steps for preparing the soup:

“Wash the navy beans and run hot water through them until they are slightly whitened. Place beans into pot with hot water. Add ham hocks and simmer approximately three hours in a covered pot, stirring occasionally. Remove ham hocks and set aside to cool. Dice meat and return to soup. Lightly brown the onion in butter. Add to soup. Before serving, bring to a boil and season with salt and pepper. Serves 8.”

It is unclear how many Americans will include bean soup on their Thanksgiving table, but citizens are reminded that the soup is available in the Senate restaurant year-round.
