Democratic Rep. Luis Gutiérrez announced he plans to boycott Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in a tweet early Friday, according to The Hill.

“I’ve been to, let me see, two Clinton inaugurations, I’ve been to two of them for Bush, two of them for Obama,” Gutiérrez said in an interview with CNN’s “New Day.”

“I’m not going to this inauguration, I can’t go to this inauguration, because he continues to spew hatred, bigotry and prejudice even after he said he was going to bring us all together.”

The Illinois representative reported the idea to boycott the inauguration originally came from his wife, who encouraged him to attend a protest march instead.

“Too many people marched and protested, and we created a society in which there were new voices added to it and I think he just wants to quash those voices,” Gutiérrez added.

Trump will be inaugurated Jan. 20, 2017, and plans to attend several balls afterward. Traditionally, the inauguration starts with the president-elect attending church services, followed by a procession to Capitol Hill where the outgoing president will share a ride with the president-elect. The new president will then attend a luncheon on the Capitol grounds before riding back to the White House in the Inaugural Parade.
