The American department store Nordstrom is offering a great deal just in time for the holiday season — an $85 rock.

While the rock is “wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast backstitching,” according to Nordstrom’s website, it is not quite clear why the non-precious stone is so expensive relative to other rocks for sale.

The fact an artisan worked on the finishing touches could explain its exorbitant price tag.

“This one is cut, shaped, sewn and finished by hand in artist Peter Maxwell’s Los Angeles studio,” the product’s description reads.

Perhaps its because of its ostensible versatility, which Nordstrom boasts.

“A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you,” the product’s details continue.

The item is no longer available, but it is not clear if this is because it was such a hit with consumers that it sold out, or if the online mocking was too much for Nordstrom to handle. (RELATED: Fraudsters Create Clever Fake Apps To Steal Christmas Money)

In a similar situation, Whole Foods was berated when it sold pre-peeled oranges in plastic containers for $6 per pound. A large reason for the consumer disdain, though, was arguably the wastefulness of individually packaging oranges.
