About 48 million people living in the northern half of the country could see below zero temperatures within the next seven days, according to meteorologist Ryan Maue of WeatherBELL Analytics.

While November was relatively mild, Americans have already been hit with frigid weather and snow in December thanks to two breakaway portions of the “polar vortex.”

Frigid weather hit the Midwest and East Coast Thursday morning. The Washington, D.C. area was 24 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning with strong 22-mile-per-hour winds. Bundle up!

The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang noted a second polar vortex breakaway should hit this weekend. So get ready for “punishing cold” that “will crash into the Northern Plains on Saturday and Sunday before lifting over the Great Lakes on Sunday and Monday,” the Gang wrote.

“The back-to-back blasts will cause temperatures to drop to 20 to 45 degrees below normal in affected areas. Many areas will experience some of their coldest December weather in years,” the Gang noted.

Stay warm! And don’t plan any global warming protests.
