Footage of the assassination was released by authorities shortly after the shooting took place.

WATCH (WARNING, GRAPHIC):

The gunman has been identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, a Turkish police officer.

Authorities shot and killed Altintas shortly after the attack took place.

MSNBC reported just after 12:30 p.m. EST that after shooting Karlov, Altintas shouted “Allahu Akhbar.”

He continued to speak in Arabic — yelling, “remember Aleppo! Remember Syria!” — then switched to Turkish and again back to Arabic before being taken out by police.

This is a developing situation. Check back for updates.
