Newsweek senior writer Kurt Eichenwald told Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos that a series of tweets he composed suggesting President-elect Donald Trump had been institutionalized in the early 1990s were both part of a “series of jokes” and a broader attempt to signal a source.

“I was writing a series of jokes leading up to that with the intent of sending that tweet, which was a signal to a source to talk to me,” Eichenwald said, in reference to the tweet.

He was not more specific.

He further claimed the tweet was meant as something of joke, an attempt to mock those on the right who insinuated former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was concealing a serious illness. Eichenwald made absolutely no reference to either of these defenses in his viral interview with Tucker Carlson of Fox News, who hosted him on his program to discuss the tweet. (RELATED: Newsweek Writer Loses His Mind After Tucker Carlson Asks Him A Question [VIDEO])

Eichenwald was elusive and at times rambling in the Fox News appearance, and continued to evade legitimate questions about the claim during his GMA appearance on the basis that it was too complicated to explain. There is no evidence that the president-elect has ever been remanded to the care of psychiatric professionals.

“There’s a long story behind it,” Eichenwald told Good Morning America. “There was a reporting purpose to that tweet going out, which is more than you’re going to want to hear about.”
