President Obama said that the Trump campaign had no factual grounding in an interview with The Atlantic’s Ta Nehisi-Coates published Tuesday.

“You know, in some ways the access to all this information has made it easier to set up narratives that are entirely separate from fact,” Obama said in a response to a question about the media environment. He continued, “I mean witness the current election and what Trump is doing. There is no grounding in fact.”

According to The Atlantic, this interview occurred before the election, on September 27, 2016.

Obama also alluded to Trump when he said, “Very rarely has somebody won the presidency based on a dark, grim vision of what America is.”

When Coates replied, “Well, we’re getting close,” Obama affirmed “Right.”

The interviewer, Ta Nehisi-Coates, has gained prominence as a journalist and author, writing the book Between The World and Me and making the case for reparations. (RELATED: Meet The Rich Man’s Malcolm X)
