A North Carolina chapter of the NAACP called for a boycott of the state in the wake of the state’s refusal to repeal its bathroom bill.

North Carolina NAACP President William Barber requested that the entire NAACP launch a national economic boycott of North Carolina, reports ABC 11.

“Some people like to say this is Democrat versus Republican, but this is extremism,” he said at a news conference Thursday. “This is a party that has been hijacked by extremists who are afraid they cannot win if things are fair.”

The call for a boycott comes after North Carolina state legislators upheld House Bill 2, the state’s transgender bathroom bill. The bill prevents transgenders from using the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity, among other things. (RELATED: North Carolina ‘Bathroom Bill’ Remains After Repeal Fails)

The legislators had a deal to repeal the bathroom bill if the city of Charlotte rolled back their local ordinance that allowed transgenders into the bathroom of their choice. During a special session Wednesday, Republicans attached a six month ban to the repeal that would prevent cities from extending protections to gay and transgender citizens.

Some Democrats refused to vote for the repeal with the provision attached.

Barber went on to denounce the bathroom bill as unconstitutional and against the desires of the people.

“This legislature is trying to raise a new Confederacy in policy,” Barber declared. “This group doesn’t respect the Constitution. They do not respect the voices of the people. They do not respect the will of the people.”
