Former New York Police Department commissioner Bernard Kerik on Wednesday night called for hate crime charges against the black suspects who videotaped their torture of a mentally handicapped white man in Chicago.

“These savages should be charged federally with hate crimes and punished to the full list extent of the law! Where is Al Sharpton?” Kerik said on Twitter as he shared a link to The Daily Caller’s coverage of the brutal crime. Chicago police are currently reluctant to label the torture — which included the suspects yelling “fuck white people” as they beat their bound victim — a hate crime. (RELATED: Chicago Police Hesitant To Call Videotaped Torture Of White Man A Hate Crime)

“Kids make stupid decisions — I shouldn’t call them kids, they’re legally adults. But they’re young adults and they make stupid decisions,” Chicago Police Department Commander Kevin Duffin said at a Wednesday press conference in response to a question on whether law enforcement considers racial animosity a motive for the crime.

Duffin added that the anti-white slurs could just be “stupid ranting.”

Kerik has spoken out about Chicago’s out-of-control crime problem and urged President-elect Donald Trump to create a crime commission to hash out a plan to deal with the Windy City’s murder epidemic in a column published Tuesday. Kerik served as NYPD police commissioner in the early 2000s when the city was continuing to reduce its historic crime levels from the early 1990s.
