Trump’s America: Adults Aren’t Using Coloring Books Anymore

Toward the end of the Obama presidency, a very dangerous trend started to emerge among American adults. Something about modern life began to infantilize supposedly grow-up human beings, as folks across the country embraced coloring books. That’s right, coloring books. You know, the plaything used to keep children occupied when you don’t want to pay attention to them.

Amazon has an entire section devoted to adult coloring books, which claims that swear word coloring books are the hottest thing. This includes titles like “Calm the F*ck Down: An Irreverent Adult Coloring Book,” “Go F*ck Yourself, I’m Coloring: Swear Word Coloring Book,” “Release Your Anger: An Adult Coloring Book with 40 Swear Words to Color and Relax, Midnight Edition” and “Memos to Shitty People: A Delightful & Vulgar Adult Coloring Book.” Just lovely.

I have no idea exactly what engendered this Benjamin Buttoning of what I can only assume are Hillary Clinton voters. But at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Bloomberg reports that “Barnes & Noble Holiday Sales Sink as Coloring-Book Fad Fades.” Sales at bookstores were way down this holiday season, which the article blames on “Coloring books and other art supplies — products that had surged last year in part because adults were embracing them — were particularly weak.” In other words, Trump has not even been sworn in yet, and he has already had an immensely positive impact on the American spirit. We can only hope that after four to eight years of President Trump, adults will start acting like adults again. Leave the coloring books to kids. Simply put, searching for “coloring books” on Amazon should not yield results rife with four-letter words.

(Note: “Being Gay Is Okay,” pictured above, is a real life coloring book. Seriously.)
