The former president was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital Saturday after experiencing shortness of breath. Although Bush’s spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted early Wednesday that Bush was responding well to treatment, he has since been moved to the ICU.

McGrath announced the news in a statement which he posted to Twitter, mid-day on Wednesday.

“Shortly after our previous report on President Bush’s condition, he was admitted to the ICU at Houston Methodist Hospital to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,” the statement began.

“Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation. President Bush is stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation,” the statement continued.
