Former President George H. W. Bush wrote Donald Trump a letter explaining why he can no longer attend the inauguration Friday, saying he and his wife Barbara wish him the best but have to opt out for health reasons.

“Barbara and I are so sorry we can’t be there for your Inauguration on January 20th,” Bush wrote in a letter dated Jan. 10. “My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same with Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”

Bush was hospitalized Saturday after experiencing shortness of breath, reports Yahoo News. He was still recovering Wednesday when ABC News released the text of the letter he sent to Trump. Although Bush did not endorse Trump or attend the Republican National Convention when he accepted the nomination for president, he said in the letter he and his wife will be at the swearing in ceremony in spirit.

“But we will be with you and the country in spirit,” he continued. “I want you to know that I wish you the very best as you begin this incredible journey of leading our great country. If I can ever be of help, please let me know.”
