Tom Perez — outgoing Secretary of Labor — called for Democrats to fight President-elect Donald Trump on any and every issue during Wednesday’s debate in the race for chair of the Democratic National Committee, according to the Huffington Post.
Perez opposes Rep. Keith Ellison, who is also running. Ellison has the support of progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
“We can hit him between the eyes with a 2-by-4 and treat him like Mitch McConnell treated Barack Obama,” Perez argued during the debate.
McConnell pledged to do anything in his power to ensure President Barack Obama only won one term in 2010. “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” McConnell said at the time.
The Perez statement conflicts with Sen. Chuck Schumer, who believes in working toward the common goal of defending the middle class. “I wouldn’t call that my goal,” Schumer said. “My goal is to make sure that it’s easier for the middle class to stay in the middle class, and people trying to get there to get there. And that American values are not trampled on.”
