Kellyanne Conway described then-Republican nominee Donald Trump’s leaked tapes as a low point in the 2016 campaign, according to an interview with The Washington Post.

Conway spoke with Joe Heim about Trump’s “grab them by the pussy” comments. She acknowledged that the moment was a trying time in the campaign.

“It was probably the most difficult part, but really only temporarily. And the temporary part was because I knew he’d stay in the race. I know who he is. I know his steadfastness and his tenacity and his never backing down, never shirking from a fight, never backing down from a commitment that he made,” Conway said.

She admitted that she knew that the polls would be affected by the comments and that people would obsess over the tapes. She also pointed out that many people would draw the wrong conclusions about women and their responses to it.

“How many of them already weren’t voting for him is the question nobody asks. Other women will say, “He’s right, it’s locker-room talk. I don’t like it, but I know men who talk like that.” Or, “I listen to rap music artists or comedians who make zillions of dollars talking like that,” Conway explained to WaPo.

Trump went on to win approximately 52 percent of white women’s votes and 41 percent of women overall, according to exit polls.
