Thomas Countryman, who served as President Obama’s assistant secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation, told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Wednesday that Sean Spicer “knows more about exaggeration than anyone on the planet.”

Countryman opened by stating he is not “surprised” by remarks the White House press secretary made about “career bureaucrats” at Tuesday’s White House press briefing.

“What is ominous is taken in context with other threats by this White House to take names to warn media, public servants and other public figures to watch themselves,” Countryman continued. “I think it does raise apprehension.”

“That’s something that could be easily corrected by the white house and by the incoming secretary of state if they made clear that the long-standing prohibition against any form of retaliation or retribution still stands.”
