Washington, D.C., police have gunned down an armed robber in Anacostia who refused to drop his weapon after coming into contact with the cops.

After the armed robbery suspect fled the apparent scene of his crimes, locals pursued the man and attracted the attention of police, WTOP reports.

Two officers confronted the man and ordered him to drop his weapon. When he refused, two police officers shot him down, and he was subsequently taken to the hospital in grave condition.

“Shots were fired,” interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference. “The suspect has been taken to a local hospital where he’s currently in surgery in very serious condition.”

“Anybody who has seen or heard anything in the area, we’ll get them together, we’ll get statements from them. We’ll gather any forensic evidence, and then we’ll look at any videos we have of this particular area,” Newsham added. “We’ll look at all the businesses to see if there are any cameras so we can figure out what happened out here.”
