In what appears to be a response to the election of Donald Trump, a university English department released a statement blasting various forms of prejudice and pledging its commitment to social justice and diversity.

“We are living in a political moment marked by the legitimation of bigotry, hate, and misinformation,” proclaimed the University of Maryland English Department.

The department decried a staggering eight forms of bigotry, including Islamophobia, xenophobia, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, sexism, racism, and classism.

“The discipline of English is a source of meaning and resilience at this time of misunderstanding and fear. It makes us discerning about language and its effects,” remarked UMD English. “It drives us to question ourselves and to empathize with diverse identities. And it helps us compose a better world.”

UMD English did not substantiate with evidence of any claims of institutionalized discrimination or bigotry.

“We stand together with all vulnerable members of the campus community and the University System of Maryland,” concluded the department.

When reached for comment, no one from the UMD English Department was available to address the statement.
