BALTIMORE — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called on House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady to request President Donald Trump’s tax returns at the Democratic Policy retreat in Baltimore Wednesday.

Pelosi said his tax returns could potentially reveal financial ties to Russia, noting she has long been skeptical of Trump’s relationship with Russia and how it could impact the nation’s national security. The California Democrat said Trump’s refusal to release the documents until the IRS concludes its audit is inexcusable.

“I’m just saying at least show us your tax returns — is the audit over? Is this the audit for eternity?” she said during a press conference at the start of the retreat. “And of course that has never been a justification for not releasing your tax returns. The president continues to hide his tax returns which could provide vital insights into what financial influence Russia has on him — whether it’s personal, political or financial.”

According to Pelosi, Brady has the power to request the documents and call a committee vote to make the information public.

“Chairman Brady, the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and chairman of the Joint Committee of Taxation, is empowered to demand President Trump’s tax returns from the from the secretary of the Treasury — all he has to do is ask and hold a committee vote to make those tax returns public,” she continued. “The privilege only goes to the chairman to make the request, but then the committee can vote to make the tax returns public.”

Pelosi recalled that President Richard Nixon was willing to release his tax information despite being under audit.

In addition to calling on Brady to request the information, she reiterated her request during the course of the election for the FBI to conduct their own investigation into Trump’s relationship with Russia, arguing it’s in the best interest of the country.
