A black college organization planned a “tunnel of oppression” event aimed to show the “systemic racism” that black people face.

The Black Student Union at the University of Northern Iowa put together the event that purportedly shows the suffering of black people, reports The Courier.

One part of the event centers around the “tunnel of oppression.” Students are invited to walk through and learn how black people still face discrimination, according to one student.

“It’s just kind of explaining that we still do get discriminated against, and we want people to care about it just as much as we do,” Ashley Drain, a BSU member, said.

Precious Kennon, another group member who will be featured in the slave trade room, says the tour starts out positive, but then gets more bleak.

“I feel like a lot of people are ignorant to a lot of the stuff that is going on, but if they come here, (they can) find out all the things that happened and are still happening currently,” Kennon explained.

Other parts of the event include a mock trial between Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter.

“Slavery was abolished in 1865, and Jim Crow is over. But systematic racism is still alive,” one witness for the Black Lives Matter side will declare.

The organization also provides a separate room where people can talk out their feelings after walking through the tunnel. The tunnel can be “exhausting” for everyone involved, one student added.

A group of students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison demanded free tuition for black students in the name of justice. The Associated Students of Madison called for reparations in the form of free money. (RELATED: Student Government Demands Free Tuition For Black Students)

The university is still reviewing the proposal, according to a spokesman.
