A former union official with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) pleaded guilty to federal charges of embezzling over $180,000 from a branch of the union, according to the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Takisha Brown Dorsey, who was elected chairperson of the union representing corrections officers in the D.C. Department of Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) in January 2012, had access to union funds and was authorized to spend union money in accordance with the union’s bylaws.
In November 2015, the Fraternal Order of Police-DYRS and its approximately 240 members, took a vote of no-confidence in Brown Dorsey. After she resigned from her post, the union launched an investigation into why the union’s bank account was completely depleted, despite over $100,000 in dues being deposited over the fiscal year.
The investigation determined that, from April 2013 through December 2015, Brown Dorsey withdrew, debited or transferred approximately $183,590 from the union’s bank account for personal use.
“I knew what I was doing was wrong,” Brown Dorsey said during a Thursday hearing. “I had the ability to stop,” she added, according to the Washington Post.
“Someone devious enough to steal from their own union is not trustworthy. My inclination is to lock you up, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for now,” U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said, granting Brown Dorsey release until sentencing.
Brown Dorsey had sole access to the union’s ATM card, and she had eliminated a policy that required a second official to sign off on financial transactions, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kendra D. Briggs, as reported by WaPo.
