Former Democratic Senate candidate Jason Kander of Missouri called for Georgia election officials to allow early voting in the special election to replace former Rep. Tom Price, according to a Thursday press release published by Let America Vote.

Kander created the voting rights group after losing to Sen. Roy Blunt narrowly in 2016. Let America Vote focuses on ensuring that everyone has equal access to a ballot, and is working with former members of the Obama administration on opening up ballot access nationwide.

“Early voting is sometimes the only way a person can participate in an election,” Kander said.

“There are people who can’t take time off from work or who don’t have reliable transportation that count on early voting to participate in elections. Changing the rules for one election, especially reducing access to the polls, causes needless confusion for voters. Election authorities in Cobb and DeKalb Counties should reconsider their plans and add early voting locations and extend their hours.”

Kander started the group in February, claiming indignation at what he viewed as voter intimidation during the 2016 Senate race, but local election officials asserted that Kander worked closely with them to ensure that armed police were present at polling places to keep the peace.

Kander later called the move voter intimidation.

The Georgia special election will be held April 18, and includes much more Republicans than Democrats.

Democratic contender Jon Ossof leads current polling by a small margin.
