The White House is daring Republicans to vote against the GOP bill to “repeal and replace” Obamacare, according to House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows.
President Donald Trump and Republican leadership in Congress are doing everything within their means to court Meadows, but thus far, the congressman isn’t having it. Meadows is pushing for a more conservative approach to repealing Obamacare. He wants free-market reforms and guaranteed cuts to regulations on the health care industry.
Lawmakers put forth the manager’s amendment Monday night, in an attempt to provide some concessions to House conservatives and moderates who have expressed grave concerns with the Republican repeal platform. Meadows was less than satisfied with Monday’s changes.
“After investing hours and hours and hours of trying to find common ground between our moderate members and conservative members, and believing, because of the White House’s engagement in the process, that we could find common ground; I’ve now reached a conclusion that our leadership is going to put forth a bill that does not address any of the concerns in a meaningful way and will dare us to vote against it,” Meadows told Axios Monday evening.
President Donald Trump met with Republican leadership in Congress Tuesday morning to discuss the state of the repeal bill, which is scheduled for a floor vote Thursday. The HFC will meet Tuesday evening.
Meadows promises the group will not vote uniformly, but his voice has the power to sway members of the caucus.
