A gunman fatally shot three Wisconsin civilians and a police officer Wednesday in a slew of multiple shootings.
The shootings occurred at three different locations — a bank, a law firm and an apartment complex, reports CNN.
An Everest Metropolitan Police Department officer died while investigating the situation. A suspect is now in custody, Police Chief Wally Sparks said.
The Wisconsin state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation launched an investigation into the shootings.
The first shooting occurred at a Marathon Savings Bank, where officers responded to reports of a domestic situation. When officers came to the scene, they found two people had already been fatally shot and the suspect had fled.
Officers received another call about a suspect at a law firm. They were called again to the scene of an apartment complex where another officer was shot.
A woman claimed to witness part of the incident from her apartment window. “I thought, what is going on? I know what a gun sounds like, and thought ‘This isn’t good,'” Kelly Hanson said. “It’s tragic that had to happen, but I think they did a good job out here today.”
She said she saw the officer taken to an armored SWAT vehicle. Sparks did not discuss a motive for the shooting or give out the name of the slain officer.
“This is a complex, ongoing investigation involving three crime scenes and multiple victims of shootings at those locations,” Wausau Police Capt. Todd Baeten explained.
Sparks asked the community to pray for the families of the victims.
“I would like to send all my thoughts and ask everybody listening, Thoughts and prayers to all the victims and their families,” Sparks said. “Please keep them in your prayers and be with our officers.”
