WASHINGTON — Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson released a statement Monday saying he will not vote to end debate on the nomination of Trump Supreme Court’s pick Neil Gorsuch.

Nelson, who is from a state Trump won in 2016, said, “I will vote no on the motion to invoke cloture and, if that succeeds, I will vote no on his confirmation.”

“Deciding whether to confirm a president’s nominee for the highest court in the land is a responsibility I take very seriously,” Nelson said in a statement. “Over the past few weeks, I have met with Judge Gorsuch, listened to the Judiciary Committee’s hearings and reviewed his record with an open mind. I have real concerns with his thinking on protecting the right to vote and allowing unlimited money in political campaigns.”

“In addition, the judge has consistently sided with corporations over employees, as in the case of a freezing truck driver who, contrary to common sense, Judge Gorsuch would have allowed to be fired for abandoning his disabled rig during extreme weather conditions.”

“I will vote no on the motion to invoke cloture and, if that succeeds, I will vote no on his confirmation.”

Nelson is up for reelection in 2018 and could face Republican Governor Rick Scott. One poll from St. Leo University shows Scott and Nelson neck and neck, while another poll shows that a majority of Floridians want to see Gorsuch confirmed and not filibustered.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley told The Daily Caller last Thursday he expects campaigns against Democrats in red states like Nelson’s to make it difficult for their reelection should they defy Gorsuch.

“I think you got to consider that there’s 48 Democrats and 10 of them are from red states that were elected where Trump carried that it seems to me that when they go home and their constituents know how good this guy is, it’s going to be a tough time for them to vote against him,” Grassley said.
