A federal grand jury has indicted the former president of the United Dairy Workers of Le Mars in Iowa for allegedly embezzling more than $45,000 from the organization.

Curtis Dean Lang was charged with the theft of $45,040 while serving as president of the United Dairy Workers of Le Mars, which represents workers at Wells Enterprises, the largest family-owned ice cream manufacturer in the United States.

The alleged embezzlement took place between 2012 and June 9, 2015, according to court documents from the United States District court for the Northern District of Iowa, Western Division.

The indictment said that Lang “did embezzle, steal and unlawfully abstract and convert to his own use, the moneys, funds and assets” of the United Dairy Workers of Le Mars, according to the Sioux City Journal.

The indictment follows an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department Office of Labor-Management Standards, according to the National Legal and Policy Center.

United States marshals executed an arrest warrant on Lang Wednesday, where he was booked into a local county jail. He pleaded not guilty Thursday in federal court, where he is charged with embezzlement and theft of labor union assets.

Wells Enterprises, which produces 150 million gallons of ice cream every years, including the Blue Bunny brand and Bomb Pop, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The 2,500 employees that work for Wells Enterprises in Le Mars, Iowa, has led to the western Iowa town’s nickname as the “Ice Cream Capitol of the World.”
